Discovering Supportive Therapies for Pain Relief

Ang go-to sagot sa sakit ng katawan at headache ay over-the-counter pain medication o mga over-the-counter pain reliever medicine tulad ng Paracetamol + Propyphenazone + Caffeine (Saridon). Pang-PAINlahatan ito! Maaari itong gamitin laban sa fever, headache, body pain, dysmenorrhea and toothache.

Pero nakaka-curious rin ang mga treatment tulad ng herbal medicine; at para sa back pain remedy: acupuncture at chiropractic care. Kasama ang mga ito sa tinatawag na CAM o Complementary at Alternative Medicine.

Complementary and Alternative Medicine for Pain Relief: What You Should Know

Ayon sa NCCIH (National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health), ang CAM ay mga practices na hindi mainstream o conventional: Alternative kung ginagamit ito bilang substitute; Complementary kung sinasabay ito sa conventional treatment o pain reliever medicine1. Integrative Health naman ang tawag pag coordinated ang conventional at complementary treatment para sa holistic health (included rito ang physical, mental, emotional, social aspects) ng patient.

Bago simulan o subukan ang CAM practices, mabuting magconsult muna sa iyong doktor, para siguruhing hindi ito kokontra o makakasama sa iyong current recovery/pain management plan. Para sa mga treatment, make sure na licensed ang therapist para iwas injury at added pain.

Beyond Pain Reliever Medicine: Supportive Therapies for Pain Relief

1. Chiropractic Treatment

Dahil spine ang primary focus nito, back and neck pain ang common reasons sa pagpunta sa chiropractor. Adjustment o manipulation ang ginagawa para sa tamang alignment at improved mobility ng joints (kasama rin ang knees, pelvis, shoulder, etc.) at isa itong mabisang back pain remedy.

2. Acupuncture

Ayon sa Chinese medicinal tradition kung saan nagmula ang acupuncture, ang ginagamit na needles ay pampatanggal sa blockages ng energy flow ng “Qi” (pronounced chi) o life force. Ang Western view naman sa kung paano gumagana ang acupuncture ay mayroon itong kinalaman sa pagstimulate ng nervous system at pagrelease ng painkillers sa katawan—isang natural na pain reliever medicine.

3. Reflexology

Ang main idea ng reflexology: Connected ang ilang pressure o reflex points sa kamay at paa (pati tenga!) sa organs at systems ng katawan. Sa tamang pagstimulate ng mga ito, napropromote ang health at healing, sabay nakakabawas ng stress.

4. Herbal Remedies

Nakamamangha talaga ang healing power ng nature. Kaya sa pamamagitan ng iba’t ibang methods tulad ng aromatherapy, supplements, at teas, marami ang gumagamit ng herbs para sa pain relief. Ilan sa mga herbs at pain relief applications ng mga ito ayon sa Pain Management Nursing journal2:

  • Ginseng (oral) - headache
  • Mustard (topical) - arthritis, rheumatism, joint pain
  • Devil’s claw (oral, tea) - joint pain
  • Cinnamon (oral, tea) - abdominal pain
  • Japanese mint (topical) - musculoskeletal/neuropathic pain
  • Chamomile (oral, tea) - menstrual cramps

Paalalang magconsult muna sa iyong doktor bago sumubok ng herbal remedy (o iba pang CAM therapy); hindi pain reliever medicine ang mga herbal remedies. Pero kahit hindi pain medication ang mga ito, maaaring may adverse effects tulad ng reaction sa katawan kapag pinagsabay ito sa ibang pharmaceutical drugs.

5. Massage

Bukod sa pag-relieve ng muscle tension, deep relaxation ang habol ng massage, kaya nakakatulong din ito sa pagbawas ng stress na nagpapalala ng pain.

6. Meditation

Ang meditation ay may iba’t ibang types, tulad ng mindfulness (pagiging aware sa iba’t ibang parts ng katawan, sa nararamdaman, sa thoughts at emotions), visualization (e.g. imagining a calm, beautiful place), spiritual, breathing-focused, at iba pang methods pangontra ng stress, anxiety, at tension.

7. Tai Chi

Sa flowing movements ng tai chi, may elements ng breathing, Qi, balance, at meditation. Dahil gentle ito bilang exercise, recommended ang tai chi pati sa senior citizens.

8. Art Therapy

Nakakatulong ang iba’t ibang forms nito—tulad ng painting, dance, music—sa overall mood/disposition at sa pag-express ng emotional pain, na may mabuting effect naman sa pain relief o pag-alleviate ng physical pain.

9. Yoga

Maraming variations ang yoga, mula gentle hanggang power yoga. Sa pagcombine ng breathing, mental relaxation/focus, physical poses, flow, at balance, maituturing itong holistic practice, na sinusubukang abutin ang harmony ng mind, body, at soul.
