    Q6: What is headache symptom?

Headaches are generally classified by cause:

    1. Primary headaches1

A primary headache is caused by overactivity of or problems with pain-sensitive structures in your head.

A primary headache isn't a symptom of an underlying disease.

The most common primary headaches are:

    • Tension headache
    • Cluster headache
    • Migraine
    headache

    2. Secondary headaches1

A secondary headache is a symptom of an underlying pathology/ disease that can activate the pain-sensitive nerves of the head.

    • Acute sinusitis (sinus infection)- Sinus headaches
    • Brain tumor
    • Dental problems
    • Ear infection (middle ear)
    • Encephalitis (brain inflammation)
    • High blood pressure (hypertension)
    • Influenza (flu) and other febrile (fever) illnesses
    • Meningitis

Q7: Why does a headache occur?

Whenever the muscles, tissues or blood vessels swell, they stimulate the surrounding nerves or put pressure on them → These nerves in turn send a rush of pain messages to the brain, and this brings on a headache. Inflammatory agents- especially Cox 1/ Cox 2/ Prostaglandins cause the tissues, blood vessels to swell → stimulating the surrounding nerves → which in turn send electrical signals to the pain receptors in the brain1

Kiersch et al., 2002 compared the efficacy of Paracetamol + Propyphenazone + Caffeine (Saridon®) with Paracetamol 500 mg, Aspirin 500 mg, Ibuprofen 200 mg alone or placebo in a pooled statistical analysis of eight studies in patients with moderate to severe acute dentoalveolar pain for six hours. Majority of the patients treated with Paracetamol + Propyphenazone + Caffeine (Saridon®) reported significant pain relief and/or no pain compared to the other groups after 30 and 60 minutes of the treatment. Majority of the patients treated with Paracetamol + Propyphenazone + Caffeine (Saridon®) reported no pain or reduction in the intensity of pain with a significant pain relief score as compared to the group administered with individual drugs after four hours of study1

Q9: What is the mechanism of action of Paracetamol + Propyphenazone + Caffeine (Saridon) and what role does Caffeine play?

Paracetamol is a known centrally acting analgesic and antipyretic drug that helps reduce fever and pain.1 The studies of Boitel and Kiersch both show that Paracetamol + Propyphenazone + Caffeine (Saridon®) works better than plain 500mg paracetamol.

Also the addition of Caffeine into the formulation of Paracetamol + Propyphenazone + Caffeine (Saridon®) further improves on the therapeutic effects of both analgesic components.3 In an article by Zhang, 5 out of the 6 featured studies reported better pain relief with caffeine added in (Cancer, orthopaedic pain, chronic pain, sore throat)4
